Last March 11, 2011, an undersea earthquake struck 130 kilometers of the Eastern coast of Japan. The resulting tsunami waves (with heights reaching up to 10 meters) then hit the city of Sendai and surrounding coastal areas. At least 1600 people lost their lives, and up to 4.4 million Japanese are currently without electricity.

Though the earthquake is one of the five most powerful on record, more damage was caused by flowing water. Reports indicate that the tsunami waves traveled up to 10 kilometers inland, causing widespread infrastructure, agricultural, and societal destruction. Initial estimates peg damage value at $14.6 billion dollars—minimum. By far the most memorable scene for worldwide audiences watching the disaster unfold was the explosion at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant. The disaster is bad enough that Japan—itself no stranger to tsunamis—urgently called for help from other countries.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called the 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami the “toughest and most difficult crisis” his country has faced since World War II. What’s P100, especially when you can help the people of Japan from the comfort of your own home! Over 10,000 are missing as of this writing.
